Thanks to the people working for Philips we’ve had the chance to test out a new piece of kit, a tv/monitor unit called the Philips LED monitor with Digital TV Tuner. It’s a 21” wide screen flat panel monitor that has a bucket full of features!
Philips has been making televisions since, well just about since there were televisions. This is a company that has been around since the late 1800’s making all kinds of consumer electronics, from radios (wireless in the old days) to televisions and even personal care products like shavers.
We were sent a Philips 221TE2L which is a flat panel that includes a TV tuner. So you can have the best of both, television and computer monitor, all in one. This has its benefits, like more options for brightness and contrast, a television remote, and more. It makes using it as a computer monitor much more flexible and therefore more user friendly, particularly the disabled computer users out there.
Having the option of different input modes means if you get bored of the net you can switch to watching something on Freeview.
Here’s a quick rundown of the main specifications of this monitor/Television:
Display: LCD
- Full HD LCD display, 1920 x 1080p resolution
- LED technology ensures natural colours
- SmartContrast 20,000,000:1 for incredible rich black details
- Built-in TV tuner for viewing TV programmes on your PC monitor
- HDMI-ready for top quality, multimedia experience
- Touch Control with clear on-screen menus.
Our Good points:
- Plug and play, easy to install.
- Starts up really quick.
- Auto adjust mode to fit the application you’re using with the screen size and resolution.
- Great picture that looks really crisp.
- All that HD loveliness.
- Adaptable, with a massive amount of settings you can tweak this to suit you and your visual comfort. Because it is a tv/monitor system there’s more flexibility in this unit.
- Remote! I can turn it on and off from wherever I sit. For anyone with upper body mobility problems this will be a brilliant feature.
We have not even found any bad points, yet, with this Philips 221TE2L, which is rare. We did have an issue when using a proper HDMI cable to the back of my PC but we’re not sure what caused that so we’re looking into it. You need Windows 7 so if you haven’t upgraded yet that might be something for your Christmas list too!
Best Price we’ve found so far is £169.99 from Amazon.co.uk so it’s not even that expensive for something with so many uses. I could even plug this into my laptop on the not so good days and sit in bed with it on our little lap table, watching iPlayer or other web based television.
For the price you’ll be getting a great product in our opinion that is highly versatile and helpful to anyone with various disabilities who may be looking for something that performs several jobs. It’s been great for me, as someone who works at her computer a lot of the time, but I can also see this being absolutely brilliant for a young person, disabled or not, in their own room, as a dual function television and computer monitor too.
